As long as the data fits on the server's own disks, you do not. A separate array becomes necessary when the data outgrows the server, when more than one server needs the same data, or when you want the backup to live somewhere other than the machine producing it.
A NAS shares files over the network and is enough for file sharing, archiving and backup. A SAN presents space the server treats as an internal disk, which is what virtualisation and database environments need.
The most common thing we find: a backup that has run for two years and never been restored from, discovered at the worst moment to be incomplete or corrupt. We test the restore at handover, and test it again under the maintenance contract.
